Game Review

Earlier in the year, Fitzroy had cruised through the first seven rounds undefeated. But a shock loss to Geelong in round 10 was their second in three games, and they were expected to come out blazing when they hosted Carlton in this vital game at the Brunswick Street oval.

Carlton kicked to the railway or eastern end of the ground in the first quarter slightly aided by the wind. The match turned into an absorbing battle of the defences, and scoring opportunities were few before the Maroons made the most of their chances in the third quarter and broke away to a 10-point lead. But with the wind at their backs, Carlton rallied in the last ten minutes, and kicked 3.1 to 1.1 to snatch victory by just two points. Helping Carlton's cause, South Melbourne beat Essendon by a point at the Lake Oval, and suddenly, the Blues were back up to third.

"Carlton played a very even team in this match, but no one did so much in turning an apparently lost match into a narrow victory as Snell, Elliott, and Hammond, by their fine play in the last and critical quarter. Next to these three the men who did the most for the side were, perhaps, McGregor, Clarke who is settling into his place nicely, Johnston, Bruce, Boyle, Park, Roland, whose roving work was very fine, Caine and J. Kennedy."
(Argus July 24 p9)

At the end of this round Carlton were in 3rd spot on the ladder, Won 6, Lost 5, For 537, Against 552, Points 24 with a percentage of 97.3.

"Eight men who never played for Carlton before this year took to the field for that team on Saturday. They were Caine, Parke, McNeil, Clarke, Hammond, Johnston, McGregor and Jim Kennedy. And to use the language of the drapers' advertisements, "These new season's goods defied competition," for all played superbly." (Herald July 28 p4)
