Game Review

You can almost feel the wind crossing the ground with scorelines like this - the Blues prevailed down at Geelong with 12.27, a massive 39 scoring shots, to start Season 1940 with a win.

Farewell Corio Oval

This would be the final time Carlton plays on the Corio Oval. From next season Geelong would play at Kardinia Park.

Place Kicks

"Carlton showed at Geelong that the place kick is not altogether forgotten and demonstrated its value when kicking for goals, Although the Blues' forward work was generally faulty, Wrout and Hale obtained full returns with their attempts at goal." Jack Wrout place-kicked the Blues' first goal and Jack Hale place-kicked the seventh. (Sporting Globe April 27 p5)

At the end of this round Carlton were in 2nd spot on the ladder with a percentage of 137.5.

Despite seven months of war, 111,000 people attended the opening round of VFL matches. Just 6,000 down on the opening round of 1939.
