Game Review

The rampant Navy Blues stretched their unbeaten run to five matches with this demolition of Fitzroy at the Brunswick Street Oval. Still enduring a welter of criticism in the press in the wake of the previous week’s ill-tempered clash against South Melbourne, Carlton kept their focus and scored another percentage-boosting win over one of the other early-season frontrunners.

In the absence of suspended full-forward George Topping, Vin Gardiner returned from injury to kick five goals for the Blues. Star rover Alex Lang added another three, while Jack Baquie thrilled the crowd with his regular dashes from the wing.

Five rounds into the season, Carlton was now entrenched at the top of the ladder, one win and a massive 66 percentage points in front of Essendon. Collingwood and Geelong made up the top four, just ahead of fifth-placed University.

At the end of this round Carlton were in 1st spot on the ladder with a percentage of 170.6.
