Game Review

Despite an impressive second half, the Blues went down to Hawthorn (via defender Brian Douge's late goal) by 4 points in this exciting contest at Princes Park. No two clubs had ever dominated a season up to this point as these two had. Ultimately, neither was able to clinch the flag. Former St Kilda ruckman-forward Rod Galt made his debut for Carlton, adding to the Blues' already impressive line-up of big men.

This game was noticeable for the infamous 'boomerang' goal. A Hawthorn player had a shot from the boundary line. The ball appeared to go across the face of the goals without scoring. However, the goal umpire said that the ball had crossed the goal line, then swung out, and so a goal was awarded. Monday's Sun newspaper even had a handy diagram showing what had happened.

As expected the two League leaders put on an outstanding exhibition of power football at Princes Park, where Carlton lost by a mere four points. The lead changed at least six times in a thrill-packed last quarter. Hawthorn's win was their 11th in a row, which equals their best ever winning run created in 1961 (when they won the Grand Final). It was only the Hawks ninth century score in 51 years against Carlton - four in the last three years. It was the Blues third loss of the season (Haw, Nth Melb. and Essendon), but they showed great form, even without vice-captain Robert Walls and rover Rod Ashman. - Football Record.
