Barlow played 14 matches for the Blues over 3 years after debuting in 1901. Barlow was born in Scotland.

Originally from Yarram Yarram and later Carlton Juniors, Barlow debuted in Round 14, 1901 alongside fellow debutant Frank Field. Barlow's last game was against Geelong, in Sydney, as the Round 2 fixture was transferred and ultimately played near the end of the season!

Alex was a product of the Metropolitan Churches League and came from St Jude's along with several other players who played senior football for the Blues at this time.

Alex was cleared to Carlton Juniors in 1905, https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/242179626.
