Game Review

In the absence through injury of Ron Barassi, this match is celebrated for the debut of future Premiership star Bryan Quirk. Unfortunately, the Blues were well-beaten by a committed South Melbourne team that came from behind with a barnstorming 7-goal third quarter, and held on to win by 15 points. Quirk's three goals from half-forward was at least some consolation on a disappointing day for Blues fans, who saw their team tumble to seventh on the ladder.

Ron Barassi's thigh injury prevented him from training on Thursday, former player and assistant coach Jack Carney was in charge of the session.

Perpetual Trophy

"A new trophy held pride of place in South Melbourne's dressing room following the game against Carlton. The trophy, about 15 inches high, has a model of a Carlton and South Melbourne player on it. It was presented by Carlton president by Mr. George Harrison (Harris), and former South president, Mr. Ross Tate, for perpetual competition between the two teams. It came into competition four years ago. South Melbourne won it for the first time on Saturday." (Age May 03 p22)
