Game Review

With a traditional third-quarter burst, Carlton broke away from a persistent North Melbourne for a hard-earned victory by 13 points at Princes Park.

Champion full-back Geoff Southby was farewelled with palpable affection by his home ground crowd, and Carlton clung to third place on the ladder with two weeks left before the finals.

Jim Buckley is still one vote clear after picking up a vote for his sterling game of the weekend against North Melbourne. Rod Ashman was the big mover after another best on ground, moving into equal second place on the voting ladder. - Inside Football Player of the Year.

What a great side the Blues are! Something I saw last Saturday proved that. At quarter time David Parkin was disgusted with his team's performance with the wind that he hardly spoke to them. As Parkin ran back to the coach's box the players gathered together. Unfortunately I couldn't see who addressed them but whatever he said worked. Then as the players were positioning themselves rover Rod Ashman called the forward line players together and gave them a tongue lashing. The Blues played the second quarter as though it was a final. Watch out David, I get the feeling someone is after your job. Well done Blues. - Ray Shaw Inside Football.

Hoping to increase their percentage and hold third spot on the ladder, the Blues got a shock from the Kangaroos at Princes Park. Ian Fairley booted seven goals for North as the visitors matched Carlton in most departments. Only Carlton's experience held firm against a determined North combination which booted six goals in the final term to fail by just 13 points. Carlton fought hard to resist the Roos. The Blues increased their 10 point lead to 37 pointsby three quarter time, but North revived to give the home side a big fright. - Football Record.
