Wearing guernsey #29, Johnson played 7 games for Carlton after debuting in Navy Blue in Season 1912. He had previously played for Essendon between 1907 and 1908 where he had played 30 games and scored 4 goals, before moving up to Queensland. The Football Record noted of Johnson's first game: "W. Johnson's first game with Carlton was full of promise. He is a policeman, and his beat was about goal, which he protected well and earnestly".

Johnson was originally from Castlemaine, but also had a stint at West Melbourne VFA.

William Stephen Johnson captained West Melbourne in their VFA premiership year 1906.
There is a photo of the premiership team with a player holding the ball. Generally it is the captain who has the ball. Also two other "missing heads" Jim Neylan and George McCart are in this photo. But which two?
Bill Johnson also played in Essendon's VFL losing grand final team in 1908 (wikipedia)

The Herald May 17 p3 1912 said William Johnson is a police constable.

Johnson passed away on the 5th October, 1964 aged 78.

Footnote

1912 October 05, Johnson played in the exhibition match against Port Adelaide in Adelaide.
